Span Chart
Span Chart Information

Our joist span chart provide quick reference for contractors, engineers, and homeowners when planning projects with pre-engineered floor joists. They show the maximum allowable span based on joist depth and spacing, helping you design safe, efficient floor systems.

Use this chart to:

  • Select the correct joist depth for your project.

  • Confirm allowable spans under common live and dead load conditions.

  • Plan layouts that meet building code requirements.

Load Capacity Tables

In addition to span charts, load capacity tables outline the strength and stability of each joist type under different load conditions. These tables ensure your project has the right structural support, whether for residential, commercial, or agricultural builds.

🔧 Installation Best Practices

While Saugeen Junction Inc. provides pre-engineered floor joists and not installation services, following best practices ensures your system performs safely and efficiently. Always consult your building codes and work with qualified contractors.

1. Handling & Storage

  • Store joists flat and level to avoid warping.

  • Protect materials from excessive moisture, dirt, and direct sunlight before installation.

  • Lift joists carefully to avoid bending or twisting.

2. Placement & Bearing

  • Seat joists fully on walls or beams as per your design.

  • Use the correct hanger systems or bearing details recommended for your project.

  • Keep spacing consistent (12”, 16”, 19.2”, or 24” O.C.) as outlined in the span chart.

3. Bracing & Stability

  • Install temporary bracing during construction to keep joists plumb and aligned.

  • Add permanent bridging or blocking as specified to prevent lateral movement.

4. Cutting, Drilling & Notching

  • Avoid cutting or notching joist chords.

  • Use open webs for mechanical runs (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) instead of drilling through members.

  • If modifications are required, consult MiTek software layouts or an engineer’s approval.

5. Safety & Inspection

  • Ensure all fasteners, hangers, and hardware are installed per manufacturer recommendations.

  • Inspect each joist installation before subflooring is applied.

  • Follow all site safety protocols during installation.
